On April 13, 1946, Al Green was born in Forrest City. He has nine additional siblings, and his parents’ names are Robert G. Greene and Cora Lee. Sharecropper was his father’s occupation. At the age of 10, Al used to perform with his brothers in a group called the Greene Brothers. The family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, later in the 1950s. When Al was in his teens, his devoutly religious father caught him listening to Jackie Wilson and booted him out of the house. He subsequently began hustling and living with a prostitute. She later shot herself in the head with Green’s.38 revolver. Police discovered a suicide note in her purse.
