Allen Lafferty

Late in 1984, when Allen Lafferty returned from his construction work, he found a murder scene that appeared to have been snatched straight from the depths of hell.

His 15-month-old daughter, Erica, was found dead in her crib, and his wife, Brenda Lafferty, was lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor.

He hurried to the neighbor’s home to dial 911 because the horrible acts’ culprits had cut off the phone lines.

Allen went back and prayed next to his wife’s body, claiming not to be responsible for the killings but probably harboring a guilty conscience.

Police arrived, and detained Allen, but soon concluded he wasn’t the cause of the killings. Allen identified Ron Lafferty, his brother, to the police as the murderer.

Under the Banner of Heaven on Hulu covers the Lafferty killings and the tragic motivations underlying them.

According to reports, Allen started a new family and is still a Latter-Day Saint

Allen was correct: with the assistance of their brother Dan, Ron had killed his wife. He was the trial of Ron’s first witness.

Ron and Dan showed no remorse for their crimes and believed that God had ordered the murders. Dan said to Deseret News that Allen never brought up the killings to him:

“Allen once asked my mom why I wouldn’t repent. There are some things you can’t repent for. I’m sure Allen thought I was talking about an unpardonable sin.

What I meant is, you don’t repent for things that aren’t wrong.”

In contrast to his brother Ron, who dominated the news until his death in 2019, Allen faded from view after the trial. It’s been stated that he and his partner have a new family.

Rumor has it that Allen settled the family in Los Angeles and worked for a production firm there.

He relocated the family to Saratoga Springs, Utah, in 2015, where he started working as a lifestyle coach and motivational speaker.

Allen still has strong religious convictions and frequently seeks solace in his faith when things get difficult.

If Allen had taken decisive action, the killings might have been halted

According to Brenda McEntire’s sister, Betty McEntire, “He [Allen] is the one that let her [Brenda] down.” He ought to have looked after her that day. I find it difficult to believe he was lying.

At a Latter-Day Saints congregation for students in Provo, Utah, Allen and Brenda first connected.

Brenda had dated a lot of men in the past, but none of them had enchanted her like Allen, according to Betty.

Betty remarked to Under the Banner of Heaven author Jon Krakauer that “Allen is a charmer” and that “all the Lafferty boys have this ability to charm the socks off you.”

“Their eyes have this expression. Brenda was duped by it.

Allen was well-liked by Brenda’s family before they got married, but they started to see a different side of him then.

Brenda was under pressure from him to give up her plans for a profession in order to stay at home with their children.

In the perfect scene, The Lafferty family began to travel a risky path toward religious extremism under Ron’s skilled leadership.

Brenda, however, stood in the way of Allen joining his brothers and created a few risky adversaries in the process. LaRae Wright, her mother, said:

“Brenda stood up to those Lafferty boys. She told [Allen] in no uncertain terms that she didn’t want him doing things with his brothers.

And the brothers blamed her for that, for keeping their family apart. The Lafferty boys didn’t like Brenda, because she got in their way.”

Brenda made every effort to keep Allen away from his brothers, but it was impossible.

The revelations from God that Brenda and Erica needed to be “removed in fast succession so that an example be made of them” were things Dan shared with Allen.

Allen vowed to protect his family at all costs. He kept Brenda in the dark about the murderous scheme though.

Brenda would have been there right away and would still be alive today if he had told her about Ron’s discovery, Betty claimed. Brenda, though, was unaware of it.
