In Stony Brook, Long Island, New York, the United States of America, Awkwafina was born on June 2, 1988. Wally Lum, her father, was an IT professional who was Chinese American. In 1972, her mother Tia Lum, a painter who had lived in South Korea, emigrated to the US.

Awkwafina was, however, raised by her paternal grandparents and father after her mother passed away from pulmonary hypertension when she was four years old. She changed her stage name to Awkwafina when she was 15 years old.

The Golden Globe-winning actress received jazz and music training while attending Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, where she also played trumpet.
