Dean Ray Koontz was born on July 9, 1945, in Everett, Pennsylvania, to Florence (née Logue) and Raymond Koontz. As a child, he was frequently abused by his alcoholic father.

He attended the Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, where he won a fiction competition sponsored by The Atlantic, an American lifestyle magazine. He received his diploma in 1967. He went on to teach English at Mechanicsburg High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, after graduating.

During the 1960s, he also worked for the non-profit Appalachian Poverty Program, which assisted the poor. He converted to Catholicism while in college.

He published several suspense and horror novels under various pen names in the 1970s. He used different pen names because he felt the author, who writes novels in various genres, was a victim of negative crossover. Most of his novels are now available under his real name.

To honor one of his favorite authors, Richard Stark, Koontz wrote the “Mike Tucker” trilogy. Whispers, his breakthrough novel, was published in 1980 and sold over a million copies.
