In addition to being an actor, Frank Sutton served as a sergeant in the US military from 1943 until 1946. He also worked in cinema and television between 1950 and the 1960s. Sutton appeared in supporting roles on several television programs during the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s, including Decoy, Route 66, Naked City, The Greatest Show on Earth, The Fugitive, The Goldbergs, 87th Precinct, Gunsmoke, Empire, The Twilight Zone, and The Untouchables.
From 1950 through 1955, he had a recurring part in Tom Corbett, Space Cadet as Cadet Eric Mattison, the main foe of the Polaris Unit led by the series’ heroes. He had his big break in the 1955 Academy Award-winning film Marty when he played Ralph, the companion of the title character. Additionally, he appeared in the 1965 spy thriller The Satan Bug. Early in the 1960s, he made a comeback on stage with The Andersonville Trial.
On the 1964 episode of The Andy Griffith Show called Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., Sutton had his breakout performance. Alongside Jim Nabors’ Gomer Pyle, he portrayed the cynical and easily irritated Gunnery Sergeant Vince Carter. He played Gunnery Sergeant Carter in public service announcements as well. Along with Ronnie Schell, Sutton frequently appeared on The Jim Nabors Hour after Gomer Pyle’s production came to an end. In comedic sketches, Sutton portrayed Nabors’ character’s brother-in-law.
