Russell was taken by the Oakland Raiders as the first overall choice in the 2007 NFL Draft. Following the draft, ex-Raiders linebacker Matt Millen claimed he had advised owner Al Davis not to select Russell because of moral issues. He wasn’t chosen either, according to head coach Lane Kiffin.

Russell started 25 out of a possible 48 games in three NFL seasons. He threw 18 touchdown passes versus 23 interceptions throughout that time. Additionally, he made 25 errors, losing 18 of them.
