When Jodean Bottom was born, were her parents still together?
Trinity was never the wife of John Lee Bottom. They never revealed how or where they met, but according to accounts, they dated for a short while. When John succumbed to his fear of the Vietnam draft, the pair was still going strong.
Due of this, he moved to Canada and lost touch with Trinity, who he didn’t know was carrying Jodean. Jodean didn’t speak to her father during her formative years as a result.

Only River among the group of five decided to hunt for their missing half-sister.
River did everything in his power to bring Jodean back to the family after he found her, and all of her siblings welcomed her with open arms. When River discovered Jodean, she already had a daughter and was traveling with her.
Naturally, River grew to love the late actor and was shocked when he passed away because of her attempts to track down and reconcile Jodean with her missing family. According to reports, Jodean was not only completely hugged by River when she was found; she was also embraced by other family members, including Joaquin, and they have stayed close ever since. Jodean Bottom is actually better known for being Joaquin’s sister.
Why Is Jodean Bottom’s Surname Distinct from That of Her Half-Siblings?
When Jodean Bottom and her father fell out, the family’s last name was changed. John Lee Bottom moved to Canada out of fear of being called up for the Vietnam War draft. He was unaware that his girlfriend Trinity was already pregnant at the time.
In 1968, John fell in love there, wed American social activist Arlyn Sharon Phoenix, and had five children with her over the course of their 30 year marriage. John, who was raised in poverty, had to start working at a young age and gave up his studies. He was given various occupations, including carpenter and gardener.
The family was still using his last name Bottom when the Cult asked them to move in their main commune in Crockett, Texas. John had joined a cult named “The Children of God” by the time he was married in 1968. At that time, Jodean’s father was appointed as the Cult’s archbishop of the Caribbean and Venezuela.
The Bottom family subsequently moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the kids were forced to work as street performers to make ends meet because there wasn’t enough money and the Cult wasn’t paying its missionaries. Every time the children failed to return home with spare coin, the entire family would go to bed without any food because they were always on the streets evangelizing for the Cult.
Arlyn quickly lost faith in the Cult when the men in control ordered women to recruit men using sex, and there was also the issue of utilizing children in strange sexual acts. The Bottom family decided to leave the cult at precisely this time, and they were smuggled out in 1978.
They moved in with Arlyn’s family in Englewood, Florida after being transported there on a freighter laden with toys. Jodean Bottom’s father chose to get their last name changed from Bottom to Phoenix as a sign of the start of their new life.
Later, they relocated to California, where their mother found work and the kids kept performing on the streets for coins. The moment a scouting agent discovered them there, their story completely changed.
