In the 1986 fighter-pilot movie Top Gun, Kelly Mcginnis played flight instructor Charlotte Blackwood (call sign “Charlie”).

Kelly McGillis was the eldest of three daughters and was born on July 9, 1957, in Los Angeles County, California, to homemaker Virginia Joan (née Snell) and physician Dr. Donald Manson McGillis.

She has Welsh ancestors in addition to Scots-Irish ancestors from her father and German ancestors from her mother. She graduated with honors from Newport Harbor High School.

McGillis was born and raised in Los Angeles and studied at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California’s Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts.

She left high school in 1975, moved to New York City, and enrolled at the Juilliard School to pursue acting. In 1983, she received a Group 12 diploma.

In her lifetime, Kelly McGillis has been married three times. She met Boyd Black, her first husband, in a Julliard School theater class. In 1979, she married Boyd Black, her lover who had become her husband.

Sadly, they did not have a long-lasting marriage because they separated in 1981. In 1989, eight years after her first union with her ex-husband, Kelly married Fred Tillman.

She was introduced to Melanie Leis, the actress’ third husband. Kelly met the man of her dreams at the restaurant.

Kelly McGillis was fortunate in that she didn’t have to wait long to get her first starring role on the big screen.

In the 1983 movie “Reuben, Reuben,” she made her acting debut in one of the leading parts.

Although the movie only had a modest amount of financial success, it received a lot of positive reviews and was nominated for a few Academy Awards.

She made her television début in the 1984 television movie “Sweet Revenge.” She also made an appearance in one of the “One Life to Live” episodes that same year.

In 1985, she made a significant leap in her career when she took the lead in the neo-noir criminal thriller movie Witness.

The movie, which also starred Harrison Ford as the title character, was a huge critical and financial hit. It received eight Academy Award nominations and took home two of them.

She was nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her role in the movie, which further demonstrated how highly the critics praised her performance.

Kelly solidified her position as a talented young actress in the business with the success of the movie.
