The well-known computer entrepreneur Peter Andreas Thiel was a co-founder of PayPal, the well-known money transfer service company.

He is the president of the global macro hedge fund Clarium Capital. He oversees “The Founders Fund” as a managing partner.

Thiel was born in Frankfurt am Main, West Germany, on October 11, 1967. When he was just a toddler, he and his family immigrated to the United States. Thiel attended Stanford University to study philosophy in the 20th century.

He earned a Bachelor of Philosophy in 1989 and a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School in 1992. The Stanford Review, the school’s primary newspaper, was launched by him in 1987. Some of his Stanford classmates went on to work for PayPal.

Thiel first worked as a clerk for J.L. Edmondson, a judge on the 11th Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. He founded the “Capital Management” multi-strategy fund in 1996.

Peter Thiel co-founded a website that provided an online payment mechanism two years later. In February 2002, the company went public.

The same year, eBay paid $1.5 billion for it, and Thiel received a 3.7% interest worth around $55 million in exchange. Thiel established a global hedge fund he termed “Clarium Capital” shortly after PayPal was sold.

Thiel made a $500,000 angel investment in 2004, purchasing 10.2% of the social media juggernaut Facebook. He also joined the board, but he didn’t participate in daily decision-making.
