Emory Andrew Tate Jr. was raised in a prosperous family by a strict father and an adoring mother. In Elberton, Georgia, his father Emory Tate, Sr., worked as a sharecropper.
During World War II, he transported munitions for the US Army and practiced law for 48 years.
Chess was a game that Emory Sr. introduced to all of his kids.
At the age of 4, Emory Jr. picked up the game, and at the age of 13, he outperformed his father in terms of talent.
Emory Tate attended Northwestern University to pursue pre-medicine after graduating from Concord High School in 1976.
Tate was the only person to defeat former chess grandmaster Arthur Bisguier while he was a youngster.
When the US Chess Federation’s rating system was frozen in the late 1970s, Tate had a rating of 1797.
He eventually enlisted in the Air Force, where he excelled in chess.
He was the champion of the US Armed Forces in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, and 1989. His play stunned the Russian chess players, who admired him.
Together with Maurice Ashley, Tate achieved his first IM norm at the 1988 New York Open.
However, he didn’t earn his IM title until 20 years after his debut at the international level because he primarily played in tournaments without norms.
Tate defeated almost 80 grandmasters between 1988 and 2008.

Emory Tate’s abrupt collapse during a chess competition was the cause of death.
He passed away on October 17, 2015, in Milpitas, California, at the age of 56.

Because of this, he was able to become an international chess master before turning 50.
