Shortly after the assault, Avery was 40 miles from the scene of the crime, and he had 16 eyewitnesses to support his alibi. He was found guilty and given a term of 32 years in jail for the events that occurred during his year of deafness.

After serving 18 years and maintaining his innocence throughout, Avery was found not to be the attacker but Gregory Allen thanks to DNA testing.

After his release on September 11, 2003, he filed a lawsuit against Manitowoc County and Thomas Kocourek, the previous sheriff. He sought $36 million in damages, but after being accused of murder, he only got $400,000 in compensation.

On October 31, 2005, Teresa Halbach, a photographer, met with Avery at his house; however, she was never heard from again. Steven’s DNA was found in the bloodstains on her automobile, which was found at a salvage yard.

He was detained and charged with murder and sexual assault in November. A year later, Brendan Dassey, his nephew, acknowledged helping Avery kill her and dispose of her body.
