She competed in Miss Universe in 1978 and was crowned Miss Costa Rica in 1978. Sergio Bustamante, a producer for Televisa, made her offers after she competed in Miss Universe, but Maribel chose to stay in Costa Rica. After a few months, she relocated to Mexico after accepting the job.
Maribel wed singer-songwriter, Joan Sebastian, in 1992, but the couple later divorced. Later, in 2010, she wed Marco Chacon. Maribel also takes photos for a variety of calendars and magazines.
